Weekend
I was going to take the kids to the drive-in Friday,
but I thought it might storm and they had closed the freeway that is
the most direct route there. So we did not really do anything.
Saturday, we went to the St. Pius Church Picnic, which was really
reduced from last year. There were not that many booths, and
there really was not a wait for the chicken dinner. I have no idea what
happened to decimate the parish picnic, but I have a couple
theories. None worth writing about though.
Today I cleaned up the yard and took the boy to the St. Matthews
Community Festival, which had a lot of free bouncy jumps and the fire
truck was there. I have this theory that the St. Matthews fire
department does not really ever fight fires. As nearly as I can
tell they lead parades and rescue cats. This theory was proven
correct today by a firefighter. The firefighters were at the
community festival giving out plastic fire hats and "junior fire
fighter" stickers. When I was growing up, I got the same stickers
but they said "future fireman". There are no women on the St.
Matthews fire squad, so they can properly be called firemen. Any
how, the fireman was talking about St. Matthews and how great it is.
(We have two malls that pay enormous retail taxes, so we are a well
funded city, and there is not a lot of churn in the residential
sector. All the residential is long established single family low
density housing, for the most part, and we have a high tax rate to the
city, but if a homeowner pays prior to October 31st, the taxes are half
the face amount.) Any way, I asked the fireman what would happen if
there was a fire in St. Matthews while their hook and ladder was at the
festival. The fireman said "ma'am, there is something we call the st.
matthews bubble, fires that would typically torch another neighborhood
never get to burning here. I've been on the squad three years and never
seen a house completely burn in St. Matthews". Ha! I knew I was
right. I also called them out on taking the hook and ladder to
Kroger all the time.
